Taking care of and maintaining the health of your car’s tyres are things of utmost importance. The stability of your car while on the road as well as its safety depends to a large extent on the condition of the tyres. That’s primarily because tyres happen to be the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road. Moreover, they are one of those parts that undergo the heaviest wear and tear. And that is why, significant damage may be caused to them over the years. As a matter of fact, driving a car with damaged tyres could be a risky thing to do. That could also put at risk the life of those sitting inside and which is not a good idea at all!

So, don’t take such risks and do everything required to ensure that your tyres are road-safe at any given point of time. Just because you think you can do with a particular set of ailing tyres for a few more months, you shouldn’t do. Keep checking the tyre pressure. Yes, that’s pretty obvious and it may be presumed that you knew it. But because sometimes you exercise laxity, even after having all the knowledge, it needs to be brought to your attention. Tyres would work as intended only when they are properly inflated. If you don’t want your tyres to perform poorly then make sure they remain inflated all the time. If your tyres are under-inflated then they are likely to consume more fuel. They also get damaged faster. So, if fuel-economy is your priority, then having adequately inflated tyres is a must. The pressure of the tyres should be checked at least once a month. And for the reading to be accurate you must measure the pressure when the tyres are cold. If you don’t know how much pressure should be there in your tyres, then follow the manufacturer’s handbook.

Another important thing to consider is whether or not the tread depth of the tyre is at a safe level. Sometimes the proper measure remains marked on the tyre itself. 1.6 mm is the legal tread depth. But experts say, anything less than 2mm may be risky. Maintaining the correct tread depth is important to ensure safety of the vehicle, especially in unfavorable weather conditions as the tread depth determines the braking distance. If the tread depth is not accurate, it should immediately be corrected. You can’t, however, get it corrected at the nearby air pump.

If you don’t have much knowledge about how to measure the amount of wear and tear your tyres have undergone, then you can observe the external appearance of the tyres. This is, in fact, one of the most popular and easiest ways to check the health of your tyres. If they look worn, then they definitely are. So, get them repaired or replaced at an auto shop. If you are thinking of replacing them, then it’s advisable that you, first, do a comparison of tyre prices online.
